Kid-Friendly Things to Do in Ohio’s Grand Lake Region

Family trips don’t have to be complicated. Sometimes all you need is a lake, a playground, a splash pad, a giant wooden Bigfoot, a real space capsule, and enough ice cream to keep everyone moving in the same direction.

Located throughout Mercer and Auglaize counties, Ohio’s Grand Lake Region is packed with easy, affordable family fun. You’ll find lake days, parks, sports, festivals, library events, museums, fishing spots, and small-town stops that feel refreshingly simple.

No airport or giant budget required. And better yet, no “are we there yet?” questions on repeat… because you’re close to home!

Here are some of the best kid-friendly things to do in Ohio’s Grand Lake Region.

Grand Lake St. Marys is the big backyard every kid wishes they had.

As Ohio’s largest inland lake, it offers plenty of room for boating, fishing, camping, picnics, and simple shoreline wandering. Grand Lake St. Marys State Park includes 52 miles of shoreline, boating and fishing access, a family campground, a swimming pool, and picnic areas.

Spend the morning casting a line, floating on a boat, skipping stones, or just letting the kids burn off energy by the water.

Simple? Yes.
Still a winner? Absolutely.

If your kids still have energy to burn, Komminsk Legacy Park in New Bremen is the place to go.

This thoughtfully designed community park features wide open green space, modern playground equipment, walking paths, sports courts, splash-friendly summer fun, and plenty of room for kids to run, climb, and explore. It’s the kind of park where families can easily spend an entire afternoon without hearing the words “I’m bored” even once.

Located near other family-friendly attractions in New Bremen, the park also makes a great stop before grabbing ice cream, exploring town, or visiting the Bicycle Museum of America.

Fresh air, open space, and tired kids on the ride home?
Sounds like a successful family trip.

K.C. Geiger Park is another easy win for families. Located in St. Marys, the park supports youth baseball, softball, tennis, volleyball, soccer, and other community recreation programs. It’s also home to the Grand Miami Disc Golf Course.

If your kids need room to move, climb, play, or just get the wiggles out before dinner, this is your kind of stop.

Yes, the lake is big. But the moon is bigger.

Located in Wapakoneta, the Armstrong Air & Space Museum celebrates Neil Armstrong, the Apollo 11 commander and first person to walk on the moon. The museum features the Gemini VIII spacecraft, Armstrong spacesuits, space history exhibits, and a real sense of wonder for kids who love rockets, astronauts, and big questions.

It is educational without feeling like homework.

A rare and beautiful thing.

Every family trip needs one wonderfully weird photo op.

In Celina, that photo op is Nelson, the giant wooden Sasquatch at the Mercer County Fairgrounds. He is big, unexpected, and exactly the kind of thing kids remember.

Is it silly? Yes.
Should you stop anyway? Also yes.

Road trips need stories.

Grand Lake St. Marys is a great place to introduce kids to fishing.

The lake is known for crappie, catfish, bluegill, bass, and saugeye, and its shoreline access makes it easy to keep things low-pressure. Younger kids do not need an epic fishing expedition. They need a pole, a snack, and maybe ten minutes of patience.

That still counts.

Just remember: anyone 16 or older needs a valid Ohio fishing license.

Family math is simple. Lake day + ice cream = better lake day.

In Celina, Dream Dippers at Boardwalk Marketplace serves hand-dipped ice cream, fresh waffle cones, sundaes, and other treats near Grand Lake. Lake City Creamery & Coffee is another local favorite, known for freshly made ice cream, sweets, and specialty coffee.

Parents get coffee. Kids get ice cream. Everybody wins.

The best family getaways are not always the biggest. Sometimes they are the easy ones.

A lake close to home. A park where the kids can run. Ice cream after dinner. A museum that makes them look up at the sky differently. A cozy place to stay when everyone finally runs out of steam.

That is the magic of Ohio’s Grand Lake Region.
